Network Troubleshooting & Setup

Slow connections, dropped access, and mysterious outages — diagnosed and resolved.

Networks Are the Foundation

Every device in a modern office depends on the network. Computers, phones, printers, security cameras, smart TVs, and increasingly the HVAC system all connect through the same infrastructure. When the network has problems, everything stops. Network troubleshooting is therefore one of the most time-sensitive services we provide, and we approach it with the urgency it deserves. We have resolved network outages for businesses across Westchester County, often remotely and often within minutes of being contacted.

Diagnosing Network Problems

Network problems present in many ways: complete loss of connectivity, intermittent drops, slow speeds, inability to reach specific resources, or problems that affect some devices but not others. Each presentation points to a different class of cause. Complete loss of connectivity usually indicates a problem with the ISP connection, the modem, or the router. Intermittent drops often point to a failing network switch, a bad cable, or a DHCP configuration issue. Slow speeds may be caused by bandwidth saturation, a misconfigured QoS policy, or a device on the network consuming excessive bandwidth. Problems affecting specific devices usually indicate a driver, configuration, or IP address conflict on that device. We use network analysis tools to identify the actual cause rather than working through a generic checklist.

Wired Network Infrastructure

Wired networks are more reliable than wireless, but they require proper installation and maintenance. Ethernet cables that are improperly terminated, run near electrical interference sources, or bent at sharp angles can cause intermittent connectivity problems that are extremely difficult to diagnose without proper testing equipment. Network switches that are overloaded or failing can cause packet loss that manifests as slow application performance or dropped VoIP calls. We test cables with professional cable testers, assess switch performance, and recommend infrastructure improvements when the physical layer is contributing to problems.

VPN and Remote Access

The shift to remote and hybrid work has made VPN configuration a central part of network management for small businesses. A VPN that is configured correctly allows remote workers to access internal resources securely; a VPN that is configured incorrectly can expose the entire internal network to the internet. We configure site-to-site VPNs, remote access VPNs, and split-tunneling policies. We also help businesses evaluate whether a traditional VPN is the right solution or whether a zero-trust network access approach would better serve their needs.

Things to Watch Out For

Consumer-grade networking equipment — the routers and switches sold at retail stores — is not designed for business use. These devices typically lack the management features, performance characteristics, and security controls that businesses require. They also tend to have shorter lifespans and less reliable firmware update support. We recommend business-grade equipment from manufacturers like Ubiquiti, Cisco, and Netgear's business line, which provides significantly better performance and manageability at a modest price premium. The difference in reliability is substantial.

Network Documentation

One of the most valuable things we do for our business clients is create and maintain accurate network documentation. This includes a diagram of the network topology, a list of all devices with their IP addresses and locations, documentation of all firewall rules and VPN configurations, and records of all changes made over time. When a problem occurs, this documentation allows us to resolve it in minutes rather than hours. When a new IT provider needs to take over, they can do so without starting from scratch. Network documentation is unglamorous work, but it pays dividends every time something goes wrong.

ISP Issues

Not every network problem is caused by your equipment. ISP outages, degraded service, and misconfigured equipment at the ISP's end are common causes of connectivity problems that are frequently misdiagnosed as internal network issues. We help businesses identify when the problem is with the ISP, document the issue for the ISP's support team, and escalate effectively when the ISP is slow to respond. For businesses where internet connectivity is mission-critical, we also advise on redundant ISP connections and failover configurations.
